Good to know

The private guest house features: - 1 King bed in bedroom and Twin daybed with twin trundle sleeping 4 total. Includes all linens and towels (1 towel and 1 washcloth per guest) - Full kitchen with coffee pot, microwave, including all utensils and cookware needed for a comfortable stay. (Please bring your own preferred spices) - Basic cable - Wifi (Spectrum, fastest available on the island) - TV with Roku including Netflix, HBOGO and much more - Full private bathroom - Beach chairs and umbrellas - Pool with large deck and lounge chairs (Pool season starts Memorial Day and goes to Labor Day, we do try to open earlier and close later however..this is also dependent on the climate in early spring and late fall and could start earlier and end later.) Note: We are an older beachbox home built in 1970. We have weathered many storms and tides that come with island life. Therefore the home does have a few quirks. The floors have some uneven spots and we like to note there is only 1 large bay window in the guest house. Lastly, we do live next door, so you will see our kids toys, some construction materials as my husband does handyman maintenance, our chickens, dogs, cat and some things we are working on outside our property while here. We do not pretend to be a luxury rental, we are a quirky little island family with a well lived in home. We will not encroach on the rentals space at anytime but like guests to know that we do live next door and share the pool. We try to be as open and transparent as possible to ensure guests get the best experience they are searching for and book the perfect rental home for their needs. We also co-host other properties in Rodanthe/Waves and Salvo. If this space doesn't suite your needs, we also have many other homes varying in amenities and scale of luxury to suite a wide variety of travelers ❤️ Check em' out on my Airbnb profile page! House Rules

IF YOU BRING YOUR FURRY FRIEND, PLEASE TELL US IN YOUR FIRST MESSAGE. We live next door and our dog is off-leash and free to roam the property so it gives us piece of mind to know who our guests are bringing with them so that we may know that if they are outside together there are no worries. We like knowing the breed and temperament before your arrival so that we can adjust accordingly (we are a judgement free zone, all breeds welcome!). All breeds, cats, snakes, chinchillas, ferrets and any other furry family members welcome so long as they are house trained! Please keep in mind we have many animals on the property including a cat, dog, chickens and ducks....if your pet is not friendly with any of these I would advise not to book as they will be roaming around the property during your visit. Please DO NOT FLUSH WIPES IN THE TOILET. Island homes have septic tanks that cannot handle even "flushable" wipes, the toilet will clog and OVERFLOW. Please put any wipes in the bathroom trash can. This is very important. Please no cigarette smoking in the house and please throw away your butts in the trash, not in the yard. Dogs are welcome but please only bring dogs that are well trained, outside potty trained and not "mat trained". Pets are not allowed on the pool deck. We have a dog, a toddler and other guests who have access to the pool deck. No dogs sleeping on the beds or furniture, it is too difficult to launder out pet hair and smell between guests, please be considerate. I understand some pups who are used to this at home may not understand the boundary and if so please bring proper furniture coverings to help keep the hair off the furniture. If you go to the beach, please rinse yourself and your pets off thoroughly using the outdoor shower or hose the best you can rather than in the house shower. Sand is not easy to clean out of pipes, off furniture and the floors. Please note: We have 2 exterior cameras on the property. One by the shared pool and one showing both parking areas and road for our guests safety as well as our own. Our home is an older beach box home that has weathered many hurricanes and storms over the decades. It has some quirks which is part of its charm but also why we try to charge a very reasonable and affordable rate. We are not a luxury accommodation resort but what we lack in "fanciness" we try to make up for in hospitality and we hope that shows during your stay! We are the perfect place for a laid back group just looking to enjoy everything the OBX and Hatteras Island has to offer on our tiny old family Island Farm. ISLAND CRITTERS ◦ Your vacation rental is treated for insects on a regular basis by Outer Banks Pest Control. Along with the loveable wildlife we have here on the OBX you may encounter others that are not as lovable. Listed below are a few of the most common pests: ◦ Lizards and frogs: Harmless and small but sometimes sneak in around the pool to take a dip. ◦ • Spiders & Snakes: Many species both venomous and non-venomous. When you're on the sound, stay away from the grassy marsh areas as this is where they live. They won't bother you if you don't bother them. ◦ • No See Ums: Looks like a flea —best avoided by utilizing insect repellant. -Biting flies: On days when the west winds have been blowing, they fly over from inland and are a nuisance on the beach. Wear bug spray and it will help. Pretty rare but they do come over when the west winds blow. ◦ • Palmetto Bugs: Looks like a cockroach —harmless but plentiful. Every home on OBX has them, just part of island life. ◦ House flies and gnats: they love AC so if there's a window cracked or the door open, they invite themselves in. -Ants: They are very common here on the island. The little black ones want your food and the red ones want your first born child and revenge. -Mosquitoes: around sunset and on the sound these little guys come out to play and after a lot of rain they are quite the pest. Our favorite bug spray is Skeeter Beeter and SOS. Life is simple and easy breezy here on Hatteras Island and you'll find that we all run on island time. So relax, lay back and enjoy the simpler times of our laid back beach town. Have a great stay!

Accessibility and Availability

Neighborhood

Whether you're here to surf, kiteboard, fish, kayak, beach walk, sightsee or even go horseback riding....we have you covered! Everything is either within walking distance, available on site, or a short drive away. Rodanthe is an amazing part of the island and centrally located on the Outer Banks! Being that it's the smallest section and directly next to the wildlife refuge, the beaches are a lot less crowded than the beaches north in Nags Head or south in Avon. There are a few restaurants (only 1 late night bar) and other conveniences nearby but outside of that, the island is quiet and relaxing. If you are here for kiteboarding, Hatteras Island Sail Shop (HISS) is down the road, Barton and his son Reider are hands down the people to see if you're looking for lessons or anything surf/kite, they will give you a great value and a more personal experience. Watermans/REAL is about 2 miles away. They have live music nightly and a restaurant in the summer along with a great sunset view. There are a few other local restaurants within walking/biking distance and all locally run. Hatteras Lighthouse is a 30 minute drive away and the Bodie Lighthouse is 20 minutes away. You can ride horses on the beach in Buxton only 30 minutes away or you can get a surf lesson by your host, Jeremy, with given notice before your stay.

Guest Access

Guests have access to our pool (shared by our other guests as well as us) and beach chairs/umbrellas. Chairs and umbrellas free to use. Please let us know if anything breaks during your stay so that we can replace them for future guests. Surf lessons are upon request with prior notice and are subject to weather and wave report permitting. $100 per person for 3 hour lesson and free board rental for your stay. Cottage is FULLY HANDICAP ACCESSIBLE! 🐬 Local OBX/Hatteras Highlights Nestled in Rodanthe, one of the quieter, less crowded beach areas on the Outer Banks, you’re minutes from: • Kiteboarding, surfing, and fishing spots • Local seafood eateries and casual beach bars • The Hatteras Lighthouse and Bodie Island Lighthouse • Bike paths, nature preserves, and sound access Perfect mix of relaxation and adventure.

We absolutely loved our stay! Dawn’s place had everything we needed - full kitchen with the essentials, big fridge. Bathroom even had extras of basically anything you may have forgotten toiletries wise. I thought the packaged fresh towels was a lovely touch. The place is also handicap friendly with a ramp, wide doors and a bench in the shower and as a nurse, I thought that was an amazing feature and a rarity to find. There was even a heating pad in the nightstand. The location was perfect, mere 3 minute walk to the beach. It was peaceful, and the sunsets amazing. Location was perfect as it was in the middle of all things we wanted to do both north and further south of the island. Plus this being dog friendly, I got to bring my golden and he rated this place 5/5 paws. Very responsive to all messages and just overall just genuine, good people to rent a room from. We cannot wait to go back and stay again!

Stayed here for a weekend baby moon with the wife and dogs. Great place and super close to the beach! The dogs loved being able to walk to the beach and run around in the sand. Dawn was very responsive and gave great recommendations. Would recommend to anyone wanting to have a great Outer Banks vacation!

Dawns space is warm and welcoming. Perfect host. We arrived late and she had the lights on, a bottle of champagne, and goodies out waiting for us. Bed was super comfy and loved that we could bring our pups with us. Truly felt like a family holiday ❤️.

we had a marvelous 4 day stay at Dawn's beach get away. we brought our dog who loved all the walking paths nearby, and the DQ ice cream stand about 4 miles away. Dawn answered all out questions and made the beach house a perfect home away from home.

There is a bike path nearby that runs the length of the tri-village (about 8 miles)...the taxi service is Island Hopper and there are a few Uber drivers around.
